Prof. David Walsh, Ph.D.Young puppies cannot tolerate prolonged food deprivation as can adults. They have small stomachs and naturally rapid metabolism. Thus, food must be given to them frequently. If they have extended periods without food, there will be a drop in blood sugar, and this situation may be very deleterious to growth in stature and size. Always put safety above convenience.
Blood sugar stability requires overnight consideration. Puppies under 12 weeks lack a sufficient glycogen reserve. If fasting exceeds 8 hours, the hypoglycemic condition will develop. Weakness, tremors, and seizures could ensue. Water should not be restricted during fasting. Dehydration worsens blood sugar problems.
Pre-Bed Routine
- Serve protein-rich dinner for sustained energy
- Offer final meal 2 hours before bedtime
- Provide water until 60 minutes pre-sleep
- Take final potty break before crating
Health Monitoring
- Weigh weekly to detect weight loss
- Check gum color for paleness
- Observe morning energy levels
- Track water consumption patterns
Special Cases
- Diabetic puppies: Never fast overnight
- Underweight pups: Add bedtime snack
- Working breeds: Increase dinner portions
- Illness recovery: Free feeding access
Gradual transition to longer periods of fasting takes patience. Increase the fasting windows by 30 minutes a week. Begin this after the dog has reached 12 weeks of age. Observe for signs of hunger in the morning. If whining or anxiety show themselves in the dog, wait two weeks before extending the fast. Start again when the dog can comfortably withstand the same time period again.
Problem signs indicate it is time to make changes. Feeling weak in the morning means you waited too long to feed. Not eating breakfast indicates your puppy is stressed throughout the night. Rapid weight loss is a reason to consult the veterinarian. These symptoms indicate your puppy requires changes as they grow normally.
