Prof. Henry Webster, Ph.D.UVB lighting is crucial to turtles' survival and cannot be substituted for with basking heat. These specialized bulbs allow vitamin D3 synthesis, which turtles require for the dietary treatment of calcium. Without UVB light exposure, turtles develop horrible metabolic disorders regardless of how "good" their diet is or how their habitat is set up.
Calcium Metabolism
- UVB converts dietary calcium into usable form
- Prevents metabolic bone disease deformities
- Strengthens shell and skeletal structures
- Enables proper muscle and nerve function
Immune Support
- Vitamin D3 regulates immune responses
- Prevents chronic respiratory infections
- Reduces parasite susceptibility
- Supports wound healing processes
Reproductive Health
- Enables egg development in females
- Prevents egg binding complications
- Supports hormone regulation
- Ensures viable offspring production
Artificial UVB sources will need to replicate the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) spectrum. Look specifically for linear fluorescent or mercury vapor bulbs made for reptiles, and place them 12-18 inches above their basking spots. Replace them every six months to a year as their output in UVB will wane even if it appears to be burning brightly.
The consequences of UVB deficiency can appear within only months. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms such as rubbery edges to the shell and disinterest in basking can still be addressed. However, at a later stage, you may observe mangled limbs and eventually paralysis. In this state, it is too late to do anything but ensure that the tortoise has proper lighting.
