Use wide food bowls so they don't brush up against the sides and become overstimulated. Avoid petting your cat near the base of its whiskers. I switched to an elevated set of ceramic food dishes that didn't send her into stress-signaling overdrive, decreasing the amount of time she overfunctions her nervous system.
Damage can lead to serious consequences, although the physical effects may not always be visible. Missing whiskers can affect spatial judgment, leading to crashes into objects, and nerve endings may even be tinged with phantom pain as they regrow. My own cat was affected for weeks after suffering a bad haircut; it upset him and confused him. Protect your cat's feelers!
