Do cats hide when feeling unwell?

You see your kitty hiding more than usual. Hiding is a sign that they do not feel well. Cats instinctively hide illnesses to prevent others from seeing their weakness. As a vet, I know this behavior daily. Sick cats will often seek out spots to hide, such as closets or under the bed. They finally reach the point where their owners recognize there is a problem, despite the animals hiding and showing no symptoms.

Observe the pet for subtle signs during hiding periods; it is also wise to feel the pet's temperature behind the ears, and if it's above 103°F. Squinting eyes and tense muscles clearly signal discomfort. Litter box output consistency requires monitoring. These signs indicate a potential hidden health concern that requires a veterinarian's evaluation.

Establish a recovery zone near their hiding space. Set up food and water bowls in a location that is easily accessible. Set pheromone diffusers near. Keep noise levels low and movement to a minimum. This helps with healing while also reducing the need for movement.

Schedule vet visits promptly after noticing patterns. Bring videos of unusual behavior. Request blood work and urinalysis. Early detection improves outcomes significantly. Your vigilance protects your cat's well-being.
