Prof. Henry Webster, Ph.D.Recognizing your cat's personality is the job of scientific observation. Allow three to seven days for close observation of the cat's natural behavior without interference. The first issue I usually check on is health problems. If the cat suddenly changes its behavior, the problem may be an illness rather than a personality trait.
Social Interactions
- Track how your cat approaches family members
- Note if they initiate contact or avoid touch
- Watch interactions with other pets in the home
- Record purring frequency during affection
Stress Responses
- Observe reactions to vacuum cleaners or loud sounds
- Monitor hiding behaviors during visitors
- Check litter box usage changes
- Note excessive grooming patterns
Play Preferences
- Document favorite toy types
- Time how long play sessions last
- Watch hunting technique intensity
- Note problem-solving with puzzle feeders
Territory Exploration
- Map areas your cat frequents
- Track new object investigation time
- Note window watching habits
- Record outdoor access reactions
Ensure a constant setting while observing behavior. Avoid distractions such as parties or building remodelings. Your cat needs to have an environment it is familiar with to exhibit normal behavior. My tabby, Luna, only reveals her true character late in the day when it is quiet.
Record information in an objective manner. Use a basic chart that mentions behaviors every hour. Steering clear of subjective assumptions, such as 'she's just being defiant.' Record what will be seen, for example, ' hid under the bed 15 minutes after the doorbell rang.' These behaviors will help define character patterns.
Match observations to frameworks. The Feline Five explains why your cat doesn't offer you its food. The Finka's spectrum provides clarity around social energy. Or if a cat is hiding from strangers, it might be neurotic and irritable. This combination of factors guides what care approaches you use.
