They reduce trampling and contamination by quite a margin, preserving as much as 25% more than if floors are relied upon. Keeping hay off the floor prevents soiling by the animals and prolongs its freshness, thereby saving you money.

Positioning of racks prevents wastage. Litter corners should be free of racks. Hay racks should be of an appropriate height, at rabbit level at the nose. If the rack is at the eating level, the rabbit will pull out a lot of hay. Racks with catch trays underneath will collect the nubbins that fall and can be reused. Change hay every week or ten days.
As with any other item, take care to choose a rack with openings that are appropriate for your breed of rabbit. Metal racks with narrow bars work best because plastic models require a sturdier construction to prevent them from becoming chewed and destroyed. Avoid designs with large openings, which your rabbits can strip in no time. Take into account the length of the rabbit's neck and measure for a suitable rack before you buy.
Combine racks with good management practices. Refill hay in small batches twice a day. Mice tend to make a mess overnight, so remove damp or soiled areas. Store bulk hay in airtight containers. This keeps it fresh until it's actually on the rack. Audit consumption weekly; adjust next week's portions according to the leftovers from this week.
