Prof. Henry Webster, Ph.D.A successful course of housetraining will build good habits for a lifetime and stop damage from occurring in the house. When the rules are made clear to the dog and there is regularity in the owner's schedule, the dog learns what is expected of him. I stopped my rescue dog's accidents by implementing a planned schedule and providing plenty of good reinforcement. The proper facilities will make this phase of development a pleasant experience.
Schedule Development
- Take puppy out immediately upon waking and after naps
- Schedule potty breaks 15 minutes after meals and play sessions
- Establish consistent bedtime elimination routine
- Use alarms for nighttime breaks every 3-4 hours initially
Crate Utilization
- Confine during unsupervised periods using properly sized crate
- Follow 1-hour per month of age duration limit
- Always go directly outside after crate release
- Gradually increase free roam time after accident-free days
Accident Response
- Interrupt mid-accident with neutral 'oops' cue
- Carry puppy immediately to designated potty area
- Clean thoroughly with enzymatic cleaner within 10 minutes
- Restrict access to accident zones for 24 hours after cleaning
Surface Preference
- Use sod patches for balcony training in apartments
- Transition gradually to outdoor elimination areas
- Reward heavily only for elimination on desired surfaces
- Add scent markers with soiled paper during initial training
Signal Training
- Install bells at nose level on door handle
- Physically guide puppy to ring bells before potty trips
- Phase out guidance after consistent bell ringing
- Respond immediately to bell signals every time
Choose enzyme-friendly cleaners designed exclusively for pet odors. Avoid using ammonia products that have a strong, urine-like odor. Apply generously to the accident site, really soaking it into the carpet backing as well. Let it sit for 15 minutes; we recommend blotting it up after that. You may want to block off the area that has been cleaned for 24 hours to prevent any re-marking.
When dogs show regression in their training, check whether their schedules are consistent. Add supervision if accidents occur. If the housebroken dog suddenly uses the house, be sure to investigate possible health problems. One of my terriers had to be treated for an infection of the urinary tract because of unexplained accidents. Always check health problems before you apply behavioral treatments.
