Prof. Henry Webster, Ph.D.Create appropriate basking temperatures. The basking area should be at least significantly warmer than the water below. This temperature difference allows the turtles to regulate their metabolism optimally. If it is not hot enough, then digestion stops, and their immune system fails.
Optimal Range
- Most species require 85-95°F surface temperatures
- Water temperatures should stay 10-15°F cooler
- Measure directly on platform surface not air temperature
Species Variations
- Aquatic turtles: 85-90°F
- Tropical species: 90-95°F
- Juveniles need higher end of ranges
Monitoring Tools
- Infrared thermometers give accurate surface readings
- Digital probes track water temperatures
- Check temperatures daily before basking periods
Use lamps that are controlled by a thermostat to deliver heat from ceramic heat emitters. Ensure that lamps are positioned 12 to 18 inches above the platforms for optimum performance. Always check temperatures after lamps have been installed. If temperatures are not within acceptable ranges, either lower the lamps or try increasing the wattage or vice versa. Never take a manufacturer's word for temperatures without checking them!
Incorrect temperatures cause many serious health problems. Overheating leads to severe dehydration and damage to the nervous system. Such turtles may become lethargic, and some might even be observed gaping. Too cold temperatures can lead to respiratory infections and/or improper digestion. If temperatures are incorrect, they may refuse food or might be found sinking in a non-predatory manner.
