Should filters run continuously?

Aquarium filters must run continuously. If you stop the flow, the water isn't oxygenated, biological filtration ceases, and within minutes, deadly ammonia rises in the water as fish waste decomposes. After just two hours of an unexpected shutdown, my tanks have crashed!

Oxygenation Protection

  • Surface agitation oxygenates water for fish respiration
  • Filters create essential water movement at the surface
  • Stagnant water causes oxygen levels to plummet rapidly
  • Fish show gasping behavior within 1 hour of shutdown

Bacterial Survival

  • Beneficial bacteria require constant water flow
  • Oxygen deprivation kills colonies in under 4 hours
  • Ammonia processing stops immediately during interruptions
  • Supplement with JBL FilterStart after any unexpected shutdown

Emergency Preparedness

  • Install backup battery air pumps for power failures
  • Use uninterruptible power supplies for critical systems
  • Keep ammonia neutralizers like Seachem Prime accessible
  • Test water immediately after restoring power

Also to quote :)......"This impingement filter must be maintained carefully if continuous dependable use is desired. Clean the impellers once a month to avoid motor damage. Spray JBL Silicone Spray on the seals every three months. Check the flow rate daily. All of these practices will help lessen the chance of unexpected failures. A standby filter is also a very important safeguard in case of a power failure."

Do not remove filters slightly to clean them, unless necessary for servicing. Attempt to clean in less than 30 minutes. Have everything required in readiness before commencing. Work firmly and with intent to replace water flow quickly. Always add a supply of bacteria. Continuous running gives uniform figures and conditions; unfavourable conditions lead to sickly fish.

Get equipment designed for continuous service. Seek out filters with dependable motors and thermal protection. Fit voltage regulators to avoid surge damage. Your desire for an uninterrupted installation will be repaid with sparkling water and active fish. Healthy aquariums enjoy continuous filtration.
