Surface Safety
- Textured non-slip surfaces prevent dangerous sliding
- Porous materials provide natural traction
- Avoid smooth plastic that causes falls
Thermal Properties
- Materials that retain heat effectively
- Proper heat distribution across surface
- Avoid metal that overheats quickly
Access Design
- Ramps under 30-degree angles
- Side barriers prevent falls
- Multiple entry points reduce competition
Correct placement of heat lamps will produce ideal temperature gradients. "When required, heat lamps should be positioned 12 to 18 inches above these surfaces, and the temperatures should be recorded on the basking platform rather than in the air. Temperature must be gradually adjusted to produce the required temperature for your species, but be careful not to offer such an intense basking area that a burning hot spot occurs".
Turtle basking site confirmation by observation. Healthy turtles will scramble up enthusiastically, be alert, and then seamlessly alternate basking and swimming at that spot. Steer clear of any place where turtles dilly-dally, or where many tumble or fall before reaching a higher level. Ideal spots can be expected to be frequented systematically almost daily.
