What indicates immediate filter cleaning is needed?

Flow Reduction
- Surface agitation decreases noticeably
- Check for biofilm in tubing immediately
- Measure flow rate with stopwatch (should fill 1L in <10s)

Mechanical Distress
- Grinding or rattling sounds from motor
- Shut down filter immediately
- Inspect impeller for hair/fiber tangles

If you let debris accumulate, you risk dangerously depleting the oxygen level. Clogged intake filters can reduce flow by up to half. Fish will begin to gasp at the surface if the oxygen is that low. Use a soft brush to keep the intake vents clean and clear. Rinse them out only in aquarium water to eliminate bacteria, while simultaneously restoring flow.
Assemble an emergency filter cleaning kit consisting of separate buckets, brushes, and bacterial supplements to rinse filter materials. Always have a bottle of Seachem Prime on hand to mitigate ammonia spikes. If your water tests higher than the norm at the slightest sign of trouble, you should react quickly. Don't let a small clog turn into a disaster!
Watch for those little warning signs day by day, for example: if your fish are swimming dull and lazy, or pulling away from food, it is time to check things. Check the filters around the time you usually feed. Keep a diary and take note of occurrences. The continuous observation will keep your fish in a healthy environment, one in which they will reward you with bright colours and happy, swishing fins.
