What sounds are most painful or uncomfortable for dogs?

There are certain sounds which literally hurt the ears of dogs, purely by reason of their acuteness. Fireworks are the chief offenders, the sudden bursts of sound being like the firing of cannon on the dog's tympanum; startling him and ringing his ears with sounds above 150 Decibels. "Hairdryers or power drills cause a sustained sound above 100 dB, which makes the process of hearing painful over time, particularly in terrier specialist breeds." Using certain home appliances can be a problem at close range.

Sudden Impact Sounds

  • Fireworks: 140-170 dB bursts
  • Gunshots: 140-190 dB peaks
  • Slamming doors: 80-100 dB

Sustained High Frequencies

  • Sirens: 110-130 dB at 3kHz
  • Smoke alarms: 85-110 dB at 3-4kHz
  • Television static: 70-90 dB

Low-Frequency Vibrations

  • Bass-heavy music: 100-120 dB
  • Thunder: 110-130 dB rumbles
  • Heavy machinery: 90-110 dB

Pain thresholds vary by breed and individual sensitivity

Breed sensitivities cause different reactions. Border Collies are particularly affected by high-pitched sounds due to their extended range. Brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs, are more sensitive to sounds at bass frequency levels, while senior dogs, as their hearing deteriorates with age, become affected by moderate volume levels.

Watch for sound distress signs. Excessive panting and shaking during storms, hiding during classes during fireworks. Ears flat, tail tucked - sound distress. Whining is a high-pitched sound that indicates pain and a need for help.

Sound buffers for protection. Buy some of these and use them on days when you plan to attend loud events. Buffer the dog-safe rooms with window soundproofing. A few soundproofing options exist. Use some of that. Train your dog to wear protective ear covers. Compartmentalize loud events and schedule construction for days when the dog daycare is open. This decreases auditory stress drastically.

Immediate responses can help lessen the shock of noise exposure to your pup. If your dog is panicking, pick them up and head toward an internal windowless room; begin playing classical music softly in the background. Put mild pressure on your dog with anxiety wraps, and talk to your vet about short-term solutions in the event your pup has excessive anxiety.
