Prof. Henry Webster, Ph.D.Many people believe non-shedding dogs to be totally hypoallergenic animals, but this is untrue. Dogs all produce Can f 1 protein in their saliva and dander. These microscopic allergens are the cause of the allergic reactions in sensitive people. I have tested hundreds of dogs and find that the levels of allergens vary even within the breeds.
There are two basic sources for allergens.Dander consists of skin flecks, which contain proteins.Saliva provides allergens by direct saliva transfer during licking. Non-shedding coats will trap dander closer to the skin. Hairless breeds still give allergens from saliva. Because of this double-source, it is impossible to eliminate allergens from the pet.
Environmental Controls
- HEPA air filters capture airborne dander particles
- Hard surface flooring reduces allergen accumulation
- Weekly bedding washes at high temperatures
Pet Care Routines
- Biweekly baths with oatmeal-based shampoos
- Daily coat wiping with allergen-reducing solutions
- Designated pet-free zones especially bedrooms
Sensitivity varies from person to person. Some are allergic to dander, while others are allergic to saliva proteins. Make sure you have an exposure test before adopting a dog. You should spend 2-3 hours with the breed observing for any signs of allergic reactions, such as ocular itching or difficulty in breathing. Record the reactions.
Realistically manage your expectations. By combining breed selection with environmental management, you can help mitigate reactions, such as the selection of lower allergenic breeds like Portuguese Water Dogs. A strict cleaning schedule is followed. You can help reduce reactions, not eliminate them.
Discuss immunotherapy options with your allergist. Some patients develop tolerance through gradual exposure. Others benefit from a medical regimen. I have seen families who successfully introduced pets in this way, despite the initial sensitivities.
