Breed limitations remain a constant at many of the so-called pet-friendly hotels, even though pets in hotels are more acceptable than ever. These limitations primarily affect certain breeds, such as the Pit Bull and Rottweiler. Knowing what the limitations are will save you from disappointment when reserving rooms. Always check the limitations at the time of making a reservation.

Hotels implement breed restrictions primarily due to insurance requirements and liability concerns. Larger breeds have more restrictions than smaller ones. Some chains, such as MEININGER Hotels, do not have restrictions. Others vary the restrictions by site and property type.

You can get around restrictions if you prepare and have the proper paperwork. Have trainers provide certifications of temperament. Provide any records of vaccinations, and spay/neuter proof. Some hotels will permit a Canine Good Citizen certificate as proof of reliability.

Booking Solutions

  • Call hotels directly instead of online booking
  • Request manager approval with supporting documents
  • Consider extended-stay properties with fewer restrictions
  • Book during off-peak seasons

Documentation Preparation

  • Obtain veterinarian behavior assessments
  • Secure canine liability insurance
  • Prepare vaccination and training certificates
  • Create pet resume with references

Always check policies before traveling with restricted breeds. Call hotels weeks in advance. Get restrictions in writing. A lot of chains like Kimpton don't prohibit any breed. Some chains do require "special" approvals. Never assume policies remain unchanged.

The majority of breed restrictions are insurance-related. Hotels pay higher premiums to insure certain breeds, and some insurers will not even provide coverage. This is why we are still putting restrictions in place, even as pet acceptance has grown. Understanding this may help in managing expectations.
