Prof. Edward Clarke, Ph.D.Although baby wipes have an earth-friendly nature that appeals to dog owners, they pose risks to the ears. Their chemicals and fragrances adulterate the natural pH balance of the cell, producing stinging and inflammation. The only answer is a veterinary solution. I saw one of my terriers' reactions when a neighbor kindly used baby wipes. Evidently, the dog suffered.
Cotton pads impregnated with vet-approved solutions clean excellently without being harmful. The soft texture will readily remove debris, preserving the integrity of the ear canal. I switched to this method after noticing that my spaniel scratched less when equipped with proper tools. This change precluded the recurrence of infections, but unnecessary veterinarian visits.
Proper Tools
- Veterinary ear cleaning solutions
- Soft cotton pads (not balls)
- Hypoallergenic drying powders
Dangerous Substitutes
- Baby wipes with alcohol/fragrances
- Paper towels causing abrasions
- Cotton swabs pushing debris deeper
Emergency Options
- Saline solution for debris removal
- Damp microfiber cloth for external wiping
- Vet-prescribed medicated wipes
Chemical sensitivities make baby wipes especially hazardous for dogs. Scented products can cause allergic reactions, while preservatives can create inflammation in delicate ear tissues. A client's bulldog had rashes after using wipes that had been treated with steroid medications. Stick to pH-balanced veterinary products.
Establish habits of safety, reinforcing with positive praise during cleaning. Treats are offered to encourage prompt compliance and ensure a stress-free event all around. My golden retriever now offers his ears readily in anticipation of chicken. Consistent, appropriate care prevents infections and builds trust over the long term.
