How to prepare pets for an international move?

It requires coordinated preparation to ship dogs internationally. The time frame is probably 3-6 months prior to the actual move, which must be planned, plenty of time for the necessary veterinarian actions. We had to do this with our rescued dog when moving from Berlin to Toronto: microchip, vaccinations and several special papers. If any deadlines are missed, you will have major setbacks.

Be sure to check that your pet's ISO 11784 microchip has been put in first. This global standard ensures compatibility with microchips and scanners worldwide. ISO chips contain 15-digit codes that are readable across international borders, in contrast to basic chips. A client's cat was quarantined after their non-standard chip was found to be inoperable. Always ask your veterinarian for verification before proceeding.

3-6 Months Pre-Move

  • ISO microchip implantation: Mandatory for all countries
  • Rabies titer test: Required for high-risk nations like Morocco
  • Species-specific vaccines: Avian flu tests for birds, parasite treatment for reptiles

1-2 Months Pre-Move

  • Health certificate processing: Allow 4 weeks for government endorsements
  • Import permits: Apply through destination agriculture departments
  • Carrier training: Daily 1-hour sessions in IATA-approved crates

Book IATA-compliant carriers at least months in advance. Proper crates have vents, secure locking mechanisms, a liner that absorbs perspiration, and ample room for the dog to lie down comfortably. Observe your pet standing normally and measure him/her for the proper size. My terrier needed an extra-large container since he was 18 inches tall. Air transported at a controlled temperature avoids the possibility of harm from temperature fluctuations.

On arrival, customs clearance should be handled in detail. Original documents with government stamps must be presented. An inspection will be performed on rabies certificates and microchip numbers. Commercial moves require business licenses. Non-commercial moves require affidavits from the owners. If the documents do not contain notarization, there will be delays.
